Fields to inspect
| Field | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SKU | Inventory, fulfillment, analytics, and bulk edits often depend on stable SKUs. | Missing SKUs, duplicate SKUs, inconsistent casing or spacing. |
| Price | Invalid pricing can break checkout, feeds, or merchandising review. | Empty, zero, negative, or incorrectly formatted prices. |
| Featured image | Feeds and buyers often expect a clear product image. | Missing image, placeholder image, or wrong variant image. |
| Description | Short descriptions can make product pages and feeds harder to trust. | Empty or very short descriptions, copied placeholder text. |
| Barcode / GTIN | Some channels and product categories expect GTIN-style identifiers. | Missing barcode where the product should have one. |
| Inventory policy | Continue-selling settings can create oversell or backorder surprises. | Variants set to continue selling when that is not intentional. |
| Product type | Product organization and channel rules can depend on product type. | Missing, inconsistent, or overly broad product types. |
| Vendor | Vendor fields often drive filtering, reporting, and workflows. | Test vendors, inconsistent spelling, or internal vendor names. |
| Product handle | Handles appear in URLs and exports. | Duplicates, placeholders, or old migration handles. |
Manual cleanup workflow
- Export products from Shopify.
- Sort by SKU and look for blanks or duplicates.
- Filter prices for blanks, zeroes, and suspicious values.
- Filter images and descriptions for missing records.
- Check barcodes for categories that need them.
- Review continue-selling settings for products that should not backorder.
- Assign fixes in a spreadsheet.
- Re-check after bulk edits or imports.
