What Shopify oversell risk means
Shopify can let a variant continue accepting orders after tracked inventory reaches zero. That can be intentional for preorders or backorders; otherwise it deserves review before a stock sync, fulfillment handoff, or campaign increases demand.
Risks surfaced by the audit
| Risk | Why it matters | Cleanup action |
|---|---|---|
| Continue selling when out of stock | A variant can keep accepting orders at zero inventory when no preorder or backorder was intended. | Review the exact variant and choose whether Shopify should stop selling at zero. |
| Missing or duplicate SKU | Inventory, fulfillment, and reporting workflows need stable variant identifiers. | Add or separate SKU values before another system depends on them. |
| Barcode or GTIN gap | Retail, marketplace, and fulfillment workflows may depend on a second product identifier. | Add identifiers only where the connected workflow requires them. |
How the read-only check works
- Install through Shopify and run the free catalog audit.
- Review each oversell-risk advisory in its product and variant context.
- If the setting is accidental, preview the exact change to Stop selling when out of stock and confirm it before Loftvex writes anything.
- Leave intentional preorder or backorder variants unchanged.
This is a source-catalog audit, not an inventory sync service. It identifies risky Shopify settings and identifier gaps; it does not promise real-time stock synchronization or guarantee that overselling cannot occur elsewhere.
